Abstract

This study was performed to investigate the possibility of using Oyster Shell as a stabilizing agent for anaerobically digested sewage sludge, and utility of this mixture as a soil conditioner.
Sludge and Oyster Shell were combined with the mixing ratios of 1:0.5, 1:1, 0:1(sludge oyster shell, dry weight basis), then some of the mixed materials were thermally treated in the firing kiln at about 6001C as per designed process. So the mixed materials classified nornlal and burnt ; 1:0.5, 1:1, 0:1, burnt 1:0.5, burnt 1:1, burnt 0:1. The mixtures also mixed soil (mixtures: soi = 1:5, dry weight basis) and then were filled up in the column(diam. 10cm, depth 50cm). It were stabilized for 30 days under laboratory conditions and were stimulated with distilled water 200mL once per 5 days.

The results were as follows.

1) Mixtures of sewage sludge and oyster shell improved the fertility of soil.

2) The pH of soil leachate increased after being applied with sludge-oyster shell mixture.

3) In leachate from each treatment, the nitrate concentrations were decreased during the process of stabilization and were lower than the regulatory limit in drinking water after 20 days.

4) The characteristics between the nom-iai and burnt materials were similar.

Overall, the mixtures of sludge and oyster shell were thought to be and appropriate materials which can be returned safely to the nature without significant adverse effect.
